The importance of the ozone layer to terrestrial animals is that it entirely filters out some wavelengths of light but lets others through. Holes in the ozone layer and the dangers associated with these holes are well documented. However, one danger that has not been given sufficient attention is that these holes could lead to severe eye damage for animals of many species.

Which one of the following is most strongly supported by the statements above, if they are true?

(A) All wavelengths of sunlight that can cause eye damage are filtered out by the ozone layer where it is intact.
(B) Few species of animals live on a part of the earth’s surface that is not threatened by holes in the ozone layer.
(C) Some species of animals have eyes that will not suffer any damage when exposed to unfiltered sunlight.
(D) A single wavelength of sunlight can cause severe damage to the eyes of most species of animals.
(E) Some wavelengths of sunlight that cause eye damage are more likely to reach the earth’s surface where there are holes in the ozone layer than where there are not.

(A) is out because in the argument there is no distinction about the kind of wavelenghts filtered out
(B) again. The argument does not refer to different area of the world (earth's surface)
(C) out. No distinction about animal eyes resistance.
(D) out. No mention about the number of wavelenghts to causa damages.
(E) here it is

(E) is my answer

A) All wavelengths of sunlight that can cause eye damage are filtered out by the ozone layer where it is intact.-extreme words
(B) Few species of animals live on a part of the earth’s surface that is not threatened by holes in the ozone layer.-irrelevant
(C) Some species of animals have eyes that will not suffer any damage when exposed to unfiltered sunlight.- wrong. All animal can have their eye damaged.
(D) A single wavelength of sunlight can cause severe damage to the eyes of most species of animals.- not mentioned in text
(E) Some wavelengths of sunlight that cause eye damage are more likely to reach the earth’s surface where there are holes in the ozone layer than where there are not.-correct.

Straight E. As you may know by now, the correct answers to Inference questions are typically qualified and sometimes restrictive, and avoid making sweeping statements.

Boundary words such as "some" "likely" can be good indicators of the right answer to Inference questions. E can be adequately inferred by using the given premises without resorting to external informal.

Cheers,
Der alte Fritz.

Good question :). The argument is easy enough to understand, but the answer choices can be a little tricky.

(A) All wavelengths of sunlight that can cause eye damage are filtered out by the ozone layer where it is intact.

The argument says that holes can lead to severe damage. That doesn't mean that areas in which the ozone layer is intact do not cause any damage. That is, there is a difference between eye damage and severe eye damage.

(B) Few species of animals live on a part of the earth’s surface that is not threatened by holes in the ozone layer.

The argument does not talk about the extent of ozone holes.

(C) Some species of animals have eyes that will not suffer any damage when exposed to unfiltered sunlight.

Be careful with this one--that not all species are affected by ozone holes does not mean some species are impervious to dangerous wavelengths. The 'some species' could simply be living in area which is not imperiled by ozone holes.

(D) A single wavelength of sunlight can cause severe damage to the eyes of most species of animals.

The argument says nothing about a single wavelength.

(E) Some wavelengths of sunlight that cause eye damage are more likely to reach the earth’s surface where there are holes in the ozone layer than where there are not.

The passage discusses the effects of damaging wavelengths becoming more widespread due to holes in the ozone layer. Therefore, where there are ozone holes there is a great likelihood of eye damage.
