The incidence of suicide in the country of Travonia has increased dramatically in recent years, as evidenced by the fact that since the introduction of several non-prescription brands of sleeping pills, the number of deaths from overdoses alone has nearly doubled. However, certain types of suicides have not increased in number during this period. It is true that elderly suicides have seen a greater than 70 percent increase, but teen suicides now account for only 30 percent of all suicides in the country. This is a significant decrease over 1985, when teen cases represented 65 percent of all country-wide suicides.

The assertion that suicides are increasing in Travonia is most justified if which of the following is assumed?

The elderly suffered the greatest number of overdoses from the non-prescription sleeping pills.
Overdosing on sleeping pills was not the most pervasive method of suicide in Travonia ten years ago.
The number of deaths from natural causes in Travonia has decreased in recent years.
The majority of deaths resulting from overdosing on non-prescription sleeping pills were not accidental.
Travonia's suicide rate is higher than the worldwide average suicide rate.

I felt this was tricky and took time to reach to the answer. How would you all go about this?

Nice Question - a typical GMAT type !

The statement never says anything that ppl are using these non-prescription drugs to commit suicide. In fact, it clearly says that overdose cases have doubled. I think the second half is meant to confuse the reader. It is simply giving a status of proportion of elderly and teenagers.

I narrowed down to A & D. Read the question again and realized that it is asking about the assumption we need to make to justify that suicide rate is increasing. An increase, double, in overdose case can only be relevant to an increase in suicide rate if this overdose was not accidental. Else, they are accidental deaths.

Elderly suicide has jumped 70% but nothing relates it to the pills The elderly suffered the greatest number of overdoses from the non-prescription sleeping pills.
Irrelevant Overdosing on sleeping pills was not the most pervasive method of suicide in Travonia ten years ago.
Very obviously irrelevant The number of deaths from natural causes in Travonia has decreased in recent years.
An increase, double, in overdose case can only be relevant to an increase in suicide rate if this overdose was not accidental. The majority of deaths resulting from overdosing on non-prescription sleeping pills were not accidental.
Irrelevant Travonia's suicide rate is higher than the worldwide average suicide rate.

True ... pretty straight D.

I too had to take another look to be sure that the question stem was asking about Increasing suicides. Tackling the problem as a Causality one helps to bring in perspective the different views in the passage. To underline my thinking process:
P1. Introduction of NonPrescrition drugs -> Increase in suicide /Death rate
P2. Number of deaths from Suicide has doubled
p3. Elderly suicides have increased while teen suicides have decreased.

Clearly on reading P3, it hits that may be the Increase in death rate in elderly is because the Non Prescription Sleeping pills are not taken correctly by them ... leading to accidental deaths rather than suicides.

Question stem nonetheless asks, to strengthen the argument that Number of suicides ( rather than accidental deaths ) have increased. This can only be done if the assumption taken is Elderly deaths are not accidental but definite suicides ... Hence D
