I would say "variations that originated from..." rather than "variations originating from"...

"language variations that ORIGINATED from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and PERPETUATED by..." it seems ||

my choice is B, although not sure if meaning of "perpetuate" can interfere here... since it means "to make something continue"... in other words... are these variations still continued by geographic isolation?

I believe its between B and C.

I prefer B because of "that" to convey the meaning properly.

Definitely D.

The rest have improper structure or are not parallel.

B is not parallel, the second verb ( used as a modifier) is passive while the first is active. So both should be used in either their full form ( that's it , the second should be used with an auxiliary verb ) or their modifier form.

Would go for (B).

I'll go with D.

Languange variations have declined and continue to today.

B sounds like it happened in the past and does not continue to today.

Recreate the phrase as a full clause:

[...] language variations originated from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and were perpetuated by [...]

So if you use particilples, you should use them in correct form.
For example:

John studied a lot and hoped to get 700 on GMAT.
Studying a lot, John hoped to get 700 on GMAT.

John was discouraged by his hostile tone but decided to continue anyway.
Discouraged by his hostile tone, John decided to continue anyway.

Hope this makes things clearer.

I admit the examples are not very successful, but it is too late here and I am too tired. :sleep

sentence should start with that so that it caters to both the points ->regional dialects and language variations
perpetuated - originated

choose B

(A) which originate from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
(B) that originated from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
(C) originated from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
(D) originating from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
(E) originating from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuating

Good Question.
My first choice was B. I thought 'that originated' and 'perpetuated' are || construction.
Then I realized that if we use 'that originated', we say that 'regional dialects' were originated in past, however I feel that it's ongoing.
So D should be the right choice.

I know I would have picked B in the exam :(

This cryptic SC took over 3 minutes to decipher, but it has to be (D).

We need "originating from" as a correct parenthetical phrase and "perpetuated by" is idiomatic..

Now the OA please....

Love to see such divided discussion on an SC. Be sure to add this one to the flashcards!!
