The increased popularity and availability of televisions has led to the decline of regional dialects, language variations which originate from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated by geographic isolation.

(A) which originate from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
Should be originated, the dialects originated in the past
(B) that originated from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
Hold it
(C) originated from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
Changes meaning
(D) originating from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
The dialects are not originating today, they were originated in the past
( (E) originating from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuating
perpetuating is wrong, should be perpetuated

I would think the answer is B.

Originate and perpetuate need to be in agreement. So, you can rule out A and D.

E is also incorrect since it should be perpetuated.

Between B and C, I feel language variations that orginated is better than language variations originated

D maintains parallelism with two participle phrases (Originating from... and pereptuated by....) to explain langage variations and is my choice .

B suggets that language variations finished that is not the case here.

B correctly introduces the essential clause with a "that"

before looking at the answers, I realized that "orginate" and "perpetuated" did not equal and that they need to be in the same tense.

That therefore eliminates A and D. Choice C changes the meaning of the sentence. Choice E doesn't make sense and has incorrect word placement.

This leaves B.

Need originated and perpetuated - so its B, and C.
Went for B since you need the word "that"

Sentence requires parallel between originated and perpetuated …
(A) which originate from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated [Originate and Perpetuated not parallel – eliminate it]
(B) that originated from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated [Hold it]
(C) originated from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated [ missing conjunction – eliminate it]
(D) originating from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated [originating and Perpetuated – not parallel – eliminate it]
(E) originating from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuating [Increased and perpetuating not parallel – eliminate it]

I do not choose B, but I still fall in the trap. I saw "by geographic isolation", so "perpetuated" must be "past participate", and thus eliminate E. Need a paralelism, so A, and B out. I choose C with a little wonder why "originated" is following "by", and I still choose C.

Now I understand the D correct.

Thank the oa

Originating is progressive tense. Originated implies that dialects do not originate anymore. Upon reading about progressive tense (which I did yesterday), the OA seems correct - as dialects new dialects keep on originating.
