I'll agree with C. I think A and C are the only probably choices because Lavoisier is recognizing a specific phenomena.
I think C is better because in A, when we say the "apparent disappearance of matter in flames" we are already assuming that it's something unreal, and so adding "...is an illusion" at the end makes apparent/illusion redundant.
However in C, the usage of "apparently" is more appropriate.

(A)the apparent disappearance of matter in flames is an illusion [ Seems ok – Hold it]
(B)the matter that apparently disappears in flames is an illusion [ The sentence changes the meaning – Eliminate it]
(C)the disappearance of matter in flames is apparently an illusion [ enticing but has the modifier issue – adverb modifying the noun – eliminate it]
(D)it was an illusion that there is an apparent disappearance of matter in flames [ Pronoun “it” has no clear referent – eliminate it]
(E)it was an illusion that matter apparently disappears in flames [ Pronoun “it” has no clear referent – eliminate it]

Hi bobinabob2, I am quoting following information from Manhattan Sentence Correction 2007 edition – Page 73/ Chapter 5. Incorrect: My friend Katy is a real interesting person. Correct: My friend Katy is a really interesting person. The adverb really, not the adjective real, must be used to modify the adjective interesting. Remember that adjectives only modify nouns, while adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Answer should be "disappearance of matter in flames" A) misplaced word order. it seems to say that disappearance is apparent! not the original meaning of sentence. B) Matter is not an illusion! C) CORRECT D) Wrong tense...etc..just too wordy and meaningless E) Wrong again ..wordy etc. "C" What is the OA?

(E)it was an illusion that matter apparently disappears in flames A for me he discovered something so before he did it that was an unknown phenomenon, then how can it be apparently . only the disappearance was apparent because people had been observing it for ages
