Re: The last three men's U.S. Open golf champions have all [#permalink]
Personally,I think that we can size-down the answers the following choices:
A) Clubs strengthened by titanium are used only in Callway's new clubs.
D) Callway clubs helped the last three men's U.S. Open champions achieve their status.
++++

Though I agree with Maverick's explaination,I am not sure why (A) cannot be right. In situations like these, how do identify the correct answer?Rgds,

Anna

Which of the following claims is not made and cannot be inferred from the above ad?

A) Clubs strengthened by titanium are used only in Callway's new clubs.
B) Titanium strengthened clubs make clubs stronger and allow the player to make more powerful strokes.
C) Former U.S. Open champions know a great deal about golf and their equipment.
D) Callway clubs helped the last three men's U.S. Open champions achieve their status.
E) You will improve your golf play with Callways' clubs.

maaverick, can you refute 'A'

If Callway's was the only manufacturer using titanium to strenghten the golf club, there should've been an indication towards this in the ad. Something on the lines of "switch to your only option - Callway". In the absence of such an argument, we cannot ascertain the fact that Callway is the only brand offering titanium-strengthened golf clubs.

maaverick, I am confused now, if what you say is right, then shouldn't that be the right choice becos we need to identify a claim that is not made and cannot be inferred from the above ad

Sorry for the confusion. On further inspection, it really is a tough call between A and D.

Re: The last three men's U.S. Open golf champions have all [#permalink]
I am not convinced regarding the explanation given for A. I think this is the case of picking the best answer. :?

OE is ...

(D) The ad emphasizes that Callway's new clubs are stronger and will add power to your strokes. (B) and (E) are, therefore, inferred. It is intended that the reader of the ad should relate to the judgment of former U.S. Open champions, and, therefore, wish to follow their example; for this reason (C) can be inferred. The claim made in choice (A) is included in the ad. Choices (A), (B), (C), and (E) are all therefore claims that can be inferred. However, the ad does not claim or infer the statement made in (D). In fact, because the paragraph states that the five individuals have changed to Callway's new clubs, this implies that they used something else previously. Whether or not the change to the Callway clubs occurred before or after they became U.S, Open champions is unknown. Choice (D) is the appropriate answer.

my 2 cents

Agree with D

A is out for the same reason as C. Out of context. Just as you can argue for A you can also claim the same about C. Just because somebody is US champion doesn't mean he/she would know a great deal on equipment. Using similar logic we can refute A.
