D.
caluse parallelism
she suspected the police of having Y
and of using ....
Left D and E
D correctly uses past perfect tense to show flow of events.

This is a good one. D.
I think, the use of 'then' just before the underlined part makes the difference btw choosing A/B/C or D/E. It forces the 'ing' parallelism.
E is awkward. So we are left with D.

The correct indiom is "she suspected..... then used....." Eliminate D and E.
Eliminate C since the past perfect tense is not neccessary, i.e. "had obtained." Eliminate B because "such information as they obtained" is awkward.
I pick A.

C - This is the one which has used (matches with taped) and "they" referring to the police.
Update - Went by the wrong word. ||ism is for having / using and the choice is D.

This is indeed a tough one!
I'm going with A off an educated guess (answering at real GMAT speed). Answer choice "A" is the shortest answer and that IS my guessing strategy on SC

it is D.
The lawyer .......... suspected the police of having illegally taped ...... and then of using..... should be the || construction.

I go for D, because of parallelism "of having" and "of using"- Choice E with would be supportive of is too wordy for me.

the right parallelism here should be "having taped" and "having used", so the best one in my opinion is C even if "having" is not expressed (dont think it's necessary to express it)
