I was down to A & E and I picked A uncomfortably. How ever, E turns out to be the correct one . I googled this and found it in NY Times. Here is why E is correct

We do not have two past events in a chronological sequence. Hence B & C are out

If we look at D it says more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him. So D is comparing the number of people to the man in Q and not their qualities to the man in Q. D is out

A & E compare the qualities wealthier, better-educated and more polished. I felt that the he is awkward but again in hindsight , the comparison needs to be parallel. was is not explicitly written after he but is understood making it the correct choice.

Subject pronoun usage. "he" is the subject of this sentence.
