The media claim that the economy is entering a phase of [#permalink]
16 Jul 2006, 20:16
The media claim that the economy is entering a phase of growth and prosperity. They point to lower unemployment rates and increased productivity. Their analysis is false, though. The number of people filing for bankruptcy has increased every month for the last six months and bankruptcy lawyers report that they are busier than they have been in years.
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
A. Unemployment rates are not useful indicators of growth and prosperity. B. Economic growth cannot be measured in terms of productivity. C. Legislation has not been recently passed to make legal bankruptcy easier to obtain. D. There has not been an increase in the number of bankruptcy lawyers. E. The media often misrepresent the current state of economic affairs.

Good expl there Minheequang......
I was thinking on the wrong lines here.......I guessed my answer as D (the weaken State.) I thought that since the bankruptcy cases have gone up, it is assumed that the number of lawyers havent gone up since they are busier.
Could you please the reasoning for C in detail? Would appreciate it.
thx

thx I don't know where to begin with your reasoning, so I will go on my own way, lets see: D) There has not been an increase in the number of bankruptcy lawyers --> not increase means remain or decreasefor exp: before: 10 lawyers handle 10 cases, after: 7 lawyers handle 10 cases --> busier because of fewer lawyers although the number of cases hasn't increased --> weakens the argument that the increase of bankruptcy cases accounts for the busier activity of lawyers by demonstrating an alternate cause

IMO E. I think this question is asking assumption not weaking the argument.

It will mean that the increase in number of recent bankrupts is not consistent with standard of past. Means if this standard of bankruptcy existed in past then in past too more people could have been legally bankrupt. Thus argument will become challenged. so argument assumes that no change in standard of getting legal bankruptcy has been made in recent times.

C for me.
Media : lower unemployment rates and increased productivity => growth and prosperity. Counter evidence: Bankruptcy rise.
C supports the counter evidence by indicating there is no alternate cause for bankruptcy to rise.

I used the negation technique "Legislation has been recently passed to make legal bankruptcy easier to obtain." - This weakens the the argument saying the reason for increased filing of bankruptcy was because of the new legislation. The answer choice tries to prove that Bankruptcy is not easier to file as there has been no legislation that has been passed.

The answer is C.Let us assume that the ligislation for filling bankruptcy has been made easy.If this is the case then it is implied that the people at a certain prosperity level ( sorry for the language cant put it better ) previously who were not able to file for bankruptcy are now able to file the same although there is no change in their incomes. Hence the argument falls apart.

I Would go for :E) Premise :1) Unemployment rate(decrease) + productivity (increase) ---- > media claim (economy growing) Conclusion : Media analysis (false) Premise:2) Reason for the false media analysis ---- > bankruptcy (increase) + lawyer (busy)
Ans E) Assumption Media misrepresent the current state of economic affairs by not considering bankruptcy as one of those economic indicator Hence, Media analysis (false)
Any comment pls...

Conclusion of author : Economy is in a bad condition because too bankruptcy lawyers getting work.
Negate C: A legislation is passed to make legal bankruptcy easier.. It weakens the conclusion. Option is E is a contender but is weak compared to C

Re: The media claim that the economy is entering a phase of [#permalink]

Conclusion:Bankruptcy filings are indicative of the economic health. Premise: Increasing nos of bankruptcy filings + Bankruptcy lawyers getting busier. Understanding: If we can identify alternative cause for bankruptcy filings other than bad economy then the conclusion is weakened. Answer possibly: Will explictly state that an alternative cause is not a reason for increase in bankrptcy filings.
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
A. Unemployment rates are not useful indicators of growth and prosperity. Incorrect. it doesnt affect the conclusion.
B. Economic growth cannot be measured in terms of productivity. Incorrect. It doesnt affect the conclusion
C. Legislation has not been recently passed to make legal bankruptcy easier to obtain. Correct. Alternative cause is not the reason for increase in filings. D. There has not been an increase in the number of bankruptcy lawyers. Negate the assumption - So "There has been an increase in the number of bankruptcy laywers". Even though the number of lawyers increased they still got busier. So this in no way weakens the conclusion. Hence, Incorrect.
E. The media often misrepresent the current state of economic affairs. Incorrect. Doesnt affect the conclusion.

Re: The media claim that the economy is entering a phase of [#permalink]

The author admits to increased productivity and decreased unemployment rate. He/She just adds that the increase of bankrupcy filing is worth consideration that the analysis is false. The author assumes that the increase number in bankruptcy filing could be a reflection of the economy's state.
(C) removes the possibility that the increase in bankruptcy is not because the legislation has made filings easier to do so. If that is the case, then it is just because people are taking advantage of the easiness to file bankruptcy and perhaps, bankruptcy rate in the country has not really increased.

Re: The media claim that the economy is entering a phase of [#permalink]

Choice C is correct A) Choice is only talking about unemployment rates B) Choice is only talking about productivity C) The conclusion depends on increase in number of cases recorded of bankrupcy. If that is not because any other cause then the conclusion will become valid. This choice eliminate the possiblility of that other cause. So CorrectD) There are two parts of premises which needs to be supported. 1st :- Number of people fi………every month 2nd :- bankruptsy laweryers report……in years. This choice only supports 2nd part Hence it is insufficient to assume. E) This is rather a allegation than an assumption.

the argument is refuting the claim of media ,which in turn was claiming that the economy is entering a phase of growth and prosperity. how does argument achieve this : by providing evidence that bankruptcy has increased and that more people are filling for bankruptcy .so for this argument to hold good we have to assume that bankruptcy has not been made easy to obtain .this is what C states

Re: The media claim that the economy is entering a phase of grow [#permalink]
03 Mar 2013, 12:15
Answer is C Analysis :- (Premise) media's claim is that economy is growing, (Evidence) Employment rates are decreasing and that of productivity increasing. (Counter Premise) Number of cases of filling for bankruptcy increased and bankruptcy lawyers are busier than they ever (Conclusion) So the analysis of media is false and economy is not progressing. Author has attributed increasing number of bankruptcy cases to the conclusion that economy is not progressing. In doing so he has assumed that there are no other reasons for the increased number of bankruptcy cases. So any answer choice that would close the possibility of different reason for an increase in bankruptcy cases would be correct here. A) This choice is indeed enticing however it should be noted here that this choice goes on to weaken the media's claim but it does not establish the relationship between counterpremise and conclusion. Number of people filling bankruptcy cases has increased. Unemployment rates are not useful indicators of growth and prosperity, so the media's claim is not true. This sentence does not make sense so this choice can not be correct. B) This choice is also wrong for the same reasons cited in choice A. C) Correct Choice. This close the possibility of another reason for increase in bankruptcy cases.D) Irrelevant E) Incorrect for same reason cited in choice A Regards, Abhijit
