IMO C

tell linguists more about xyz than do - "more than" and "do" for tell are required here so eliminate A,B, D

between C and E , E uses "thier" which is ambiguous, does not clearly refer to children, hence C is clear answer.

What is wrong with "A"?

they in A is ambiguous, referring to linguists or children ?

in the question after the idiom more than " the correct forms they use" is using the work they. Isnt they ambiguous? They can refer to linguists or children .. The way we eliminated choice A saying they is ambiguous , shouldnt the same rule apply?

I think (C) is better comparison in this
