I picked A because all of the other choices contained him, which does not have a direct antecedent because its Joe's little sister which is not a noun but an adjective. But I did think A was wrong as well.

The newly released 3D Disney movie was supposed to be the best of all time and Joe’s little sister begged for taking her to see it

A) begged for taking
B) cried and begged him to take
C) pestered him greatly for taking
D) persistently begged him to take
E) insisted him taking

Source: GMAT club grammar club

I get the point that we need to add "him" to make sense but I thought adding "persistently" would result in bringing external information. Could you tell me if I'm wrong?

Thanks

D

A is incorrect because the sentence does not specify who is being begged.

B is incorrect because it is wordy.

C is incorrect because it is implying that Joe's sister pestered him because he took her. That is not what the sentence is trying to say.

E is incorrect because it is grammatically incorrect. One would gave to say "insisted that he take her."

Thank you. :)
But I still don't understand why we choose answer D. Using "persistently" changes the meaning because the girl is "begging", she's not "persistently begging" right? :?:
Maybe bringing external information is something that can be done in answering sentence correction questions on the GMAT and that I don't know yet? (I've just started to review SC questions)

I honestly do not like this question. Both answer choices B and D seem correct. I chose E because B seems a bit more wordy. Yes, D does add new information, but it does not change the meaning of the sentence. I am not sure which level of difficulty this question is supposed to be at, but once you get to the 700+ level, the sentences are almost entirely about meaning.

I hope that helps :)

I don't accept any options given to be the correct answer :

For (d) , " Joe’s little sister persistently begged him to take "

But as per my knowledge of grammar rules, you can't use a possessive noun ( here Joe's ) as the referent for a pronoun ( here him).

Hence the correct option would have been " " Joe’s little sister persistently begged Joe to take "

Other options also has the same issue and (A) is awkward.

Please let me know all of your say on this

Well we seem to agree that the answers are awkward, so I think I will forget about it and move on :-D

I admit! Poor quality question.

But the meaning makes it simple to find the answer.. X wants him to take her...

It is not an official GMAT question...

hi papahiroshi, I would not have picked B because in the original sentence, there was no indication that the little sister actually cried, just begged. The rest of the answer choices are variations and synonyms of 'begged'.

I think, the question is incorrect. in correct option D, 'him' does not have correct antecedent as in GMAT possesive nouns (in this case 'Joe's') can not be an antecedent of pronouns.

D cannot be the answer in any case....him has no antecedent.
