Juaz, B is also simple past right?

In B, increased ...twice.. is redundant. Also, C is more concise.

increased is the verb. twice is the extent of how much it increased. it is NOT redundant.

if it was doubled by more than twice. then it would be redundant

The number if undergraduate degrees in engineering colleges and universities in United states increases by more than twice from 1978 to 1985.

a) Increased by more than twice
b) increased more than twice
c) more than doubled
d) was more than doubled
e) had more than doubled

Why is D incorrect?

passive here is not good.. can you say: the number is doubled by somebody?
