So how to decide when to use increase of and when to use increase in?
What difference does it make for increase in/of as both 1920 and previous year are both a year in time?
Nice question.. I think its something to do with modifiers rather than "increase of " o "increase in" The "number of ----" is actually doubling the increase it witnessed last year. Wherease other choices mean that the "number of" itself is twice as many as o twice as much Which is wrong. B is close .. but wordy. I hope my OE was good enough.. Pls post the OE !!
Their new CDs sucks badly. There's no Explanations for both math and verbal, and you can't navigate backwards when in the Review Screen. You can only go forward when reviewing, and if you need to go backwards, you need to start the whole entire review session, starting from the math session.
The number of people flying first class on domestic flights rose sharply in 1990, doubling the increase of previous year.
a) doubling the increase of
b) doubling that of the increase in
c) double as much as the increase of
d) twice as many as the increase in
e) twice as many as the increase of
C is out As much is wrong - much uncountable Increase Of previous year is correct though it didnt sound right at 1st. B and d are out. Increase in previous year is wrong as it changes the meaning. The increase didn’t happen last year but over last year's fig As suggested adverb doubling modifies verb rose
Twice could be used if and actual no was used eg. 20 percent of young adults used cocaine in 1979, twice the number reported in the 1977 survey
