My choice A. All other choices distort the meaning of the sentence.

What is known?, the number? or humans?
In this case, the number is known. In the sense, ABC are out.
Between D and E, I go for E.

^ E ^

"humans" in a passive form in A, B and C are not correct to modify the plant and animal species. D sounds awkward too.

Go with E.

It is the plants and animals that have gone into extinction

Would go for A. E is no good because of passive construction.

Even though it is a little awkward, I think A is right too. E changes the meaning slightly and is passive.

I would go with A.
E has more degree of passiveness.

"The number of .." should be singular. "E" violates the rule.

answer is "A"

A.

The only other close option is E, and it is passive. Hence A.

The GMAT almost always prefers the active voice.

(A) edges over E.
