The outbreak of E. coli poisoning that has been traced to contaminated well water used by food vendors at the county fair has already made more than 700 people ill, and health officials expect to add another 50 or so to the list today. The virulence of this particular strain is obvious since the fair closed more than two weeks ago; yet, the number of victims continues to grow.

Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the argument?

A) The contaminated water was used by food vendors to make frozen drinks that are consumed mainly by children
B) The incubation period for the disease is two to nine days, but doctor reports to health officials may be delayed by two to three weeks
C) The well water became contaminated when a heavy run washed manure from a cattle exhibition barn into the water supply
D) Many people who are infected with E. coli and experience symptoms may not realize that they have contracted the illness and so do not see a doctor
E) Sixty-five of the victims of the outbreak have been hospitalized, and two have died from the poisoning

Yes, B.

A) So what. Doesn't weaken the conclusion that it is very virulent.
B) This would give an alternative explanation for the growing numbers on the list. I like this one.
C) So what again.
D) These people would be on no list at all. Does not weaken.
E) This doesn't refute the agument, but the illness sounds pretty nasty.

ps. I had giardia once (from camping water.) It's a good weight loss plan....
