The papers in the National Archive recounting the experiences of some 20,000 Black men who joined the Union forces duing the Civil War have been prepared to be published by the historian Ira Berlin.
A.to be published by
B.for publication by
C.for publishing by
D.as the publication of
E.for the publication by

The correct answer is B, but I want to understand the difference between
B and E. Why is the "the"--answer B, unnecessary?
I think publication be modified from "by" N phr; consequently, "the" should be necessary.
Would your give some instruction?

The sentence is not complete as is. It omits a verb for PAPERS.

Probably, it should be:

The papers in the National Archive, recounting the experiences of some 20,000 Black men, have been prepared to be published by the historian Ira Berlin.

I myself would vote for A.

Hi Stolyar
Sorry that I omit typing some words for confusing sentence with you.
Again, I hope to reply me why the correct answer is B.

there is anohter discussion going on why Nouns are preferred to Gerund and Verbs, but I can't really say why that is so.

I think that's just the "efficiency" and "style" that are give so much priority on the GMAT.

I vote for "B: for publication by"
coz, in this place, we need to explain the purpose of the papers. Thus, we should use for+Sth in order to do so.
c.f. to+V1 should be used in case of PERSON.

The phrase "the publication" does not sound proper as the sentence does not have any context of a known publication. You should use "the X" when you know what X refers to. The sentence talks about the papers that are going to be published, not referring to any specific publication.

Hm... I am a little lost after your comment; I may understand you wrong, but the sentece says that they were prepared for publication or to be published in other words. They were going to publish them.

hi

i agree with option B

"publication" is noun and "publishing" is a verb

"prepared for" is the idiomatic usage too
