The Parthenon is larger than usual for a Doric temple, with eight columns on the short sides and seventeen on the long ones rather than the typical six and thirteen.

(A) usual

(B)is usual

(C) has been usual

(D) one usually is

(E) it is usual

Could anyone tell me why is the answer is B ?
By the way, what is the difference with the sentence "I got up earlier than usual?"

thank you

The answer ought to be B only..
A ..it seems to be comparing pantheon to temple.
B.. if you notice carefully, tense is present ..and is usual does the compariosn properly.
C changes the tense.
D obvioulsy is stupid.
E. I know this can be a close call.. but if u trust your ear u will know it is not idiomatic.I always emphasize about the importance of understanding elements of style of english language in SC .. I mean sometimes on the spur of moment it is very difficult to pin point the mistake in pure gramattical terms... but if u have a good and conscious reader of language, you know it is right or wrong.
I think we dont require "it" in E.. Any more reasons?

sorry, I want to make my understanding more clearly.

When we compare A, and B, and A is part of B, we can use "than is usual" rather than than usual. Is it right?

By the way, is "than" an conjunction?

thank you
