A) "different than" is unidiomatic

B) differ from those used in older paints in that the modern ones are

C) same as A

D) are different from the ones used in older paints on account of being (oh... that "BEING" :cry: )

E) differ from the ones used in older paints because they are (paints or pigments?)

B....

to answer shoonya, in this case 'in that' was not the reason for choosing b. in general, i can't think of a sentence where in that would be the only deciding factor. if it was i'd take the option that sounded more like because. of course, i'm no expert :)

Yes, (B) clarifies the ambiguity of "they" in E. Did anybody notice "in that" is interchangeable with, but not necessarily preferred to, "because?"
