A) and his purpose was recounting
B) With the purpose to recount
C) to recount
D) therefore recounting
E) he recounted

A) and his purpose was recounting===>COMMA before AND is missing.(2 IC s to be connected with COMMA FANBOYS)
B) With the purpose to recount(with the purpose makes it wordy)
C) to recount==>correct
D) therefore recounting==>changes the meaning==>seems that ILLIAD is still recounting.
E) he recounted[/quote]===>changes the meaning /// ungrammatical

hence C

I did not get why B is wrong.
What does "too wordy" mean?
btw while answering I felt both B and C as correct answers...

B and C are both gramatically correct..
in order to choose best answer of the lot CONCISION also comes in to play.

example:
HE CAN RUN.
HE HAS THE ABILITY TO RUN.
both the sentences are gramatically correct above...but first sentence is concise and conveys the same meaning.

so we will prefer 1st sentence.

hope it helps

Answer should be C

Meaning
Poet Homer composed the epic poem The Illiad. His purpose behind writing this epic was to recount the role of Achiles in the Trojan War.

Lets have look at the answer choices.

A) Incorrect - This choice connects two independent clauses with and but without comma. We almost always need comma before coordinating conjunction while connecting two independent clauses.

B) Incorrect - with the purpose is redundant because to itself is sufficient to express purpose or intention.

C) Correct - Corrects all the errors mentioned above

D) Incorrect - therefore recounting changes the meaning of sentence. It implies that recounting of roles of Archiles was the outcome of the epic but not necessarily the purpose of writing.

E) Incorrect - Run-on sentence. Two independent clauses poet homer composed epic and he recounted the roles of Archiles are running together without using a proper coordinating conjunction.
