The style of using both ‘the reason and because’ in the same sentence is awkward due to redundancy since reason itself is a cause. On that score, we can eliminate A and D. In B, the pronoun ‘he’ is stranded clumsily, without a proper referent as it can not refer to the possessive ‘Africanus’s’. E, of course is wrong because of using the phrase, “the reason being”, as if the reason exists even now . C is the remainder which is short and sweet.

The reason doesn't go along with because => C is correct. I think so.

The reason why Scipio Africanus wept after his defeat of Hannibal was because he knew
Scipio Africanus's weeping after his defeat of Hannibal was because he knew
Scipio Africanus wept after his defeat of Hannibal because he knew
The reason Scipio Africanus wept after his defeat of Hannibal was because he knew
Scipio Africanus wept after his defeat of Hannibal, the reason being that he knew

There are two things to keep in mind when you approach a q like this
1. Redundancy- for that reason you can eliminate A (The reason why... was because...- the two phrases express the same idea), D and E.
2. Construction is awkward b/c we want to properly express that the man was weeping... not that the weeping was caused by something.) We're talking about him (Scipio) not about it (weeping)
C is your answer IMO

should be C

A) The reason why Scipio Africanus wept after his defeat of Hannibal was because he knew

B) Scipio Africanus's weeping after his defeat of Hannibal was because he knew

C) Scipio Africanus wept after his defeat of Hannibal because he knew CORRECT

D) The reason Scipio Africanus wept after his defeat of Hannibal was because he knew

E) Scipio Africanus wept after his defeat of Hannibal, the reason being that he knew

I am able to narrow down to option C. But I have doubt in option E. Why in option E "The Reason Being" is awkward and wrong usage. Request help here?

on sc, gmat test un grammar and logic.

though it is simple to explain grammar errors, it still takes a long time to know the grammar rules used on sc, though basic rules

but the main point gmat test is still logic/meaning. and gmat can use simple grammar rules to test hard point of meaning

come back to question, why e is wrong.

IMO, e has no grammartical problem . the pattern : main clause+noun+doing , is correct.

so, I decide to see look at meaning problem.

is meaning in e is logic, clear and not redundant?

meaning is not clear. reason for what. not clear.
