Re: The recent decline in land prices has hurt many institutions that had [#permalink]
The land prices have gone down, but the college won't be affected by this decline because it received the land as a gift.

The conclusion is pretty straightforward, but surely it assumes that the college has no intention of utilizing its gift in anyway, especially by selling the land. Because if it has to do that, it is sure that it is not going to receive as much money now than it should have, has the land prices not fallen.

Looking at options :

A) I wonder why does it matter what location of the land gifted to the college is at. How does this option make us believe that the college would or would not be affected by the land price decline. I can't infer any link. This option has no impact on the conclusion. Incorrect.

B) Okay, so the college received more of money than a land as gift. But how does that matter.. in this case, we are talking about land which was gifted and not about what the college normally receives. Moreover, the fact stated in the option doesn't have any link with how the land price decline is going to affect the college. Incorrect choice.

C) Okay, so the land price for the college area is higher. But is that piece of land our concern ?... we have to focus on that specific land which was gifted to college. What happens to the price of college's land has no link with the other land. Incorrect choice.

D) So the college had an intention of selling the land it has. Its more probable to sell a gifted land than your own land, isn't it.... It means that the money college would have got before by selling land could have been greater than today's. This seems a definitive loss to the college and weakens our conclusion. Likely answer.

E) What the college paid and for what has no link with the land in consideration. Incorrect.

Answer should be D.
