E for me. The last part of the sentence says "the preoccupations of their own time". We have to choose an answer that introduces a reference for "their". Only D and E have one. I choose E because D is awkward.

Agree that it was beetwen D and E
I would have chosen E because I thought that it was wrong grammatically to write "inevitable" in E :
"historians in writing about it inevitable reflect"

it should be the adverb here, no ? "inevitably" rather than "inevitable"

please help

Needed a plural - historians so it should be between D and E. D reads awkward with to it. So E sounds the correct answer.
