The rectangle has fencing surrounding an animal pen 20 [#permalink] New post 09 Jul 2003, 05:59
The rectangle has fencing surrounding an animal pen 20 meters by 5 meters. If an additional 4 square meters is to be enclosed by moving just one side of the pen, while retaining its rectangular shape, what is the least possible number of meters of additional fencing needed?

Why would it not be 1/5? When you look at the picture, the new area is discernable as (.4)(20) = 8. The question said additional area of 4, so why not 1/2 of .4 = .2?

2/5 (2*1\5) is the additional fencing needed. the new breadth is 5+1\5.

because both sides of the fence have to be increased and not one.
2*1/5=0.4
