@fluke, in my opinion, the question is correct, noun vs. noun, so I don't think it should be 's.

Guess, the sentence intended to compare the "salad options" in the current place with the "salad options" in the buffet fare, but failed. If we turn a deaf ear to that issue, "A" should be the answer.

I think Buffet fare means buffet menu, another type of list, so it should be logical.

OR Salad options in place A were better than the list of foods in place B. Awkward. Salad options in place A were better than the salad options among foods available in place B. OR Salad options in place A were better than the salad options in the list of food in place B. OR Salad options in place A were better than those in place B. OR Salad options in place A were better than place B's.

Went with A because
B and C did not agree with each.
D had a salad and salads did not make sense
E was faulty as well.
