The significance of the GMAT? [#permalink] New post 26 Jan 2005, 10:46
Ok, I realize that the GMAT is significant. I realize that it is one of the few quantitative standards that adcom people have to judge two similar applicants but I have been meaning to ask a question with regard to the significance of the GMAT after you get that >=700. I read people's profiles that they post on the GMAT club...you know the "what are my chances" posts. For people applying to the top tier schools most people who post I have noticed have 700 or above. I happen to be one of those people who is planning on applying to a few top tier schools (I have not taken the GMAT yet). I am studying sooo hard to get that 700 score but it seems that even if I do it won't be anything special, I'll just be another applicant of the many applicants I'm sure they get, who get >=700 score. Don't get me wrong I want a >=700 score, mostly because my GPA is so low, but still, it doesn't seem like it would set me apart as an applicant.

the fact that your gpa is low will put your gmat under the microscope. if you had a high gpa from a very competitive school and just had an ok gmat you'd probably get a pass. its not all in the stats you need to be able to tell a convincing story about why you need an mba from XXX university

That's right. A high GMAT alone won't set you apart -- that's why you need more than that, as jackson mentioned.
