1)During World War II the Department of Defense was the nation's largest employer, directly employing over 16
million soldiers who served in combat and thousands more support staffers who served the war effort domestically,
and which indirectly supported several million additional jobs through its extensive use of the manufacturing and
trasportation industries.

(A) During World War II the Department of Defense was the nation's largest employer, directly employing
(B) The Department of Defense was the nation's largest employer during World War II, which directly employed
(C) During World War II the Department of Defense was the nation's largest employer and employed
(D) The nation's largest employer during World War II was the Department of Defense was, directly employing
(E) During World War II the the nation's largest employer was the Department of Defense, which directly employed

IMO 'E'.
Reason
----------
Here two sentences has been joined with a conjunction "and" and thus need to be parallel.
During World War II the Department of Defense was the nation's largest employer, directly employing ............ the war effort domestically, and which indirectly supported several .............trasportation industries.

Therefore the first clause should be "which directly employed", therefore options A,C and D are incorrect.
B is incorrect since the relative clause "which directly employed" seems to refer to "World Was II" which is incorrect. Hence it is incorrect.

Thus the answer is E.

(D) The nation's largest employer during World War II was the Department of Defense was, directly employing
(E) During World War II the the nation's largest employer was the Department of Defense, which directly employed

(A) During World War II the Department of Defense was the nation's largest employer, directly employing
The last part doesnt go with the second part of the sentence "which indirectly supported"

(B) The Department of Defense was the nation's largest employer during World War II, which directly employed
here which is modifying world war 2

(C) During World War II the Department of Defense was the nation's largest employer and employed
the parts before and after and share a parallel relationship whereas they should follow a cause effect relation.

(D) The nation's largest employer during World War II was the Department of Defense was, directly employing
the 2 "was" dont make sense

(E) During World War IIthe the nation's largest employer was the Department of Defense, which directly
employed

Best answers however the two "the"'s dont make sense

The correct part of the sentence refers to the plant by saying that it is grown across India

E is the only option with the plant in the subject

IMO A

Reason
-----------
1. Singular subject "ability" requires singular verb assists. So B is incorrect.
2. assists their mating in D is not idiomatic.
3. "helping them to distinguish their own species from of others" in E is grammatically incorrect.
4. "those" is incorrectly used in C for species.

So A

(D) The Decalepis hamiltonii plant has an extract, which has proved helpful in protecting brain cells from damaging effects of alcohol,
(E) The Decalepis hamiltonii plant, an extract of which has proved helpful in protecting brain cells from damaging effects of alcohol,

IMO E.

Reason
---------

A. The sentence incorrectly says that the extract is grown in India.
B. This sentence contains a fragment. "is grown across India" lacks a proper subject.
C. Like 'A' it incorrectly says that the extract is grown.
D. This sentence contains a fragment.

E correctly places the modifier "an extract of which has proved helpful in protecting brain cells from damaging effects of alcohol" after the plant.

If we omit the part included inside the commas then the sentence remains as such :

Since 1992 several regional offices...

the present perfect is suitable for use in this form. So the answer will be either C or D.

C states : voted to allow that which is unidiomatic

So D

IMO D.

Since 1992, ................ , several offices began setting .............
Began is incorrect since a present perfect is required here to highlight an event that happened in the past and is true in the present. So the sentence should be ,
Since 1992, ................ , several offices have begun setting .............

So, A,B and E are incorrect.

"that" is used awkwardly in C. Also "based on the performance of the entire department as a whole" sounds better than "based on how the entire department performs as a whole" .

So D is correct.

My submissions:

1. Correct option : E

Reason: Here 'which directly employed over 16 million soldiers ...' correctly modifies"..the Department of Defense.

A: "directly employing" modifies the entire previous clause
B: "which directly employed" modifies the adjacent noun World War II
C: "employer and employed" are redundant usages
D: Wrong usage of "was". Also similar to A, "directly employing" modifies the entire previous clause

2. Correct option : B

All have "assists, a singular verb form for a plural noun bats

3. Correct option : C

Only this option has the modifier "which has proved helpful in protecting ...correctly attached to "A Decalepis hamiltonii extract"

4. Correct option : C

Only A & C have the correct phrase "the entire department performs as a whole". The other options have "entire department as a whole" which is a redundant construction. Between A & C, C has 'have begun" which is the correct tense form.

5. Correct option : C

The meaning is brought out clearly in the construction "As companies rethink ". Only C amongst B, C & D has the correct form of "whether" instead of "if"

2)Contrary to popular belief, bats are not blind, and in fact are among the most sensory animals on the planet; they use sonar to locate prey, and their ability to communicate adially at wide range of frequencies assists them in mating, helping them to distinguish their own species from that of others.
(A) assists them in mating, helping them to distinguish their own species from that of others.
-Use of singular demonstrative pronoun "THAT" is incorrect because the antecedent is Plural SPECIES

(B) assist them in mating, helping them to distinguish their own species from that of others.
- The subject of the 2nd clause is "Ability" & not the "Bats", so verb should be singular "ASSISTS". Moreover, use of singular demonstrative pronoun "THAT" is incorrect because the antecedent is Plural SPECIES

(C) assists them in mating, helping them to distinguish their own species from those of others.
-Use of THOSE unnecessarily lengthens the sentence . Incorrect

(D) assists their mating, helping them to distinguish their own species from those of others.
-Use of THOSE unnecessarily lengthens the sentence . Incorrect

(E) assists them in mating, helping them to distinguish their own species from others.- Concise & unambiguously conveys the correct meaning. CORRECT

SOMEWHERE I READ WHEN EVER THERE IS SINCE IN THE SENTENCE WE SHOULD USE PRESENT PERFECT. Is this correct Zarrolou? Please shed some light.
