most thorough seems repetitive. "A thorough attempt.." should be enough to convey the message. Thus, I choose D as the correct answer

sorry for the delay but OA is A. I chose (B), but by not having 'most', the meaning is slightly changed. This is an SC from GMATClub challenges.
