The table below shows the total sales record in july for the 5 sales people at Acme truck sales. It wasdiscovered that one of Cal's sales was incorrectly recorded as one of Ann's sales. After this error was corrected,Ann's total sales were still higher than Cal's total sales, and the median of the 5 sales totals was 330,000.What was the value of the incorrectly recorded sale?

Ann----450,000
Bob----360,000
Cal-----190,000
Dot-----210,000
Ed------680,000

1)30,000 2) 48,000 3) 90,000 4) 120,000 5) 140,000

Please explain.

Since, new median is 330000, the Ann's sales figure should be 330000. Therefore, value of incorrectly recorded sales = 450000-330000= 120000.
(Cal's corrected sales figure will be 190000+120000=310000, which is still less than Amy's).

I drew it out but re-arranged order for simplistic viewing:
(Original, in error)
E-680
A-450
B-360
D-210
C-190

Above, the median is 360.

For the revised chart, we know only A and C changed and yet the median is now 330 but that A>C.
Only focus on changing values for A and C, where A provides the new median value. C cannot provide the new median value b/c it is, by definition, less than A.

450-330 = 120.

(check your answer: 120+190 = 310)
