What do you mean by the voulme of the cube? Its not clear to me.

This can be either the total volume of the cube or the volume of the material of the cube.

If this appears in real GMAT like this then it depends on the choices.

Exterior dimentions are a+2, b+2, c+2
Interior dimentions are a,b,c

Total volume of the cube = (a+2) (b+2) (c+2)

volume of the material of the cube = (a+2) (b+2) (c+2) - abc =
2 *(ab + bc + ca) - 4(a+b+c) + 8

If it is a cube.

Why is there 3 dimmensions..

a= b= c. right.

I guess i don't understand the question.

I would go like this..
Each wall of cube is lesser by 1 inches..
means length =a-1
Breadth=a-1
Height=c-1
so Vol would be
(a-1)(b-1)(c-1)

i think you have to consider both sides
so each side is shorter by 2
