The train A leaves the station X at 1:00 PM. It runs at an average rate of 50 mph. The train B leaves the station Y at 2:00 PM and runs towards the train A at an average rate of 40 mph. Assuming that XY consists of two parallel lines, what XY should be in order for the trains to meet at near midnight?

How ill the train B catch up with A, if it runs slower than A and starts also at a later time.. Could you correct the values which you have in mind..

It is given that the B moves towards the A. They have to meet at some point by moving at any nonzero velocities.

I am extremely sorry. I don't know i mixed that up with something else.

Is it 950?

Train A travels 50 miles in an hour.

Train B and train will have to travel 10 hours from 2 pm onwards to meet at midnight.

Distance trvalled then would be 900 miles . (Realtive speed * time).

So, 90*10 = 900 miles.

So total distance is 950 miles.

Correct.

My solution: the train A travels 11 hours at 50 mph; thus, its distance is 550 miles. The train B travels 10 hours at 40 mph; thus, its distance is 400 miles. Finally, the total distance is 550+400=950 miles.

an easy stuff, no?

Ya kinda? But the same seems to be dificult for many during the 3.5 gruelling hours at the examination center.

I do not understand your question. My verbal skills are weak.
It seems to me to be a kind of CR question. Probably an inference one.
Here is my inference: if you mean whether I invented this question—yes, I did. But I see no Venn diagram in the neighborhood.
