The answer is B here.

A. of the wish of both groups to strengthen labor's role not only in politics but also industry. Lengthy, not only has "in", so but also should have "in" too.
B. both groups wished to strengthen labor's role in politics as well as in industry. Correct choice
C. the strengthening of labor's role in politics as well as industry was wished for by both groups. Awkward formation, as well as does not link parallel phrases.
D. it was wished by both groups to strengthen labor's role in politics and industry as well. Awkward construction of sentence.
E. Both groups wished to strengthen labor's role in both of the two areas of politics and industry. Awkward construction of sentence because of both occurring twice.

The core of the issue is maintenance of symmetrical prepositional parallelism of a two-part phrase. When we use a prepositional phrase such as ‘in politics’ in one part, we must follow it up with another such phrase in the other part, namely, ‘in industry’. Except B, none others do this. E also has a redundancy in the use of ‘both and two’

B.

Connectors like “as well as” or “not only . . . but also” must link like terms. So if you say “in politics,” you have to say “in industry.” (E) is unnecessarily wordy.

Option A : 'in' after the phrase "but also" is missing (Against the principle of Parallel Construction).

Option B : Correct. (No errors)

Option C : Grammatically, it is correct but its a passive voice compared to B. Hence less preferable.

Option D : Use of 'both' and 'as well' is a sign of redundancy.

Option E : When 'both' is used it means it is pointing towards two entities. So, 'both of the two' is an incorrect use.

But both should be followed by and , then how c is correct????
