Mike

Approach 1
The answer choices D and E can be ruled out because these choices introduce verb "hold" in the second clause, resulting in the merging of two independent clauses without any proper conjunction.
Among ABC, only A is correct because it uses "such as" to introduce examples.

Approach 2
This one can also be done using the concept of Absolute Phrases.
I even developed a technique to recognize Abs. phrases in the questions. If you see two clauses without any conjunction and the second clauses briefly describes the preceding clause in EXACTLY its own words then the question is probably of Absolute Phrases. Just ask "HOW" after the first clause and if the following clause answers the question, then BINGO.

+1 A
Regards.

Mike

B, C & D can be ruled out because SUCH AS is used for giving examples. Option E is not grammatically correct as it creates a Run-on; moreover, use of HOLD changes the intended meaning of the sentence.
Original intent - Other nations are holding US dollars that increase each year. This action is result of Large trade deficit in US.
Changed intent - Other nations HOLD US dollars that increase each year. The action HOLD is represented as a UNIVERSAL Truth.

option A succinctly presents the results of previous clause, using HOLDING

Dear jlgdr,
What fameatop was, for some reason, strangely calling a "universal truth" is something much better known by the standard grammatical name: an absolute phrase. See this post for more:
