+1B

"blue whale and the other baleen whales" is plural , so "eat" is correct, Eliminate A and C
"The way" is singular, Eliminate D
Between B and E, Option E is wordy and awkaward. B wins

Good evening,

Is the formulation "the way in which" proper by the way? It sounds so weird to my ears...

Thank you very much in advance for your reply.

A & C would be out since the mighty blue whale and the other baleen whales male a plural subject.
D would be out since were is used incorrectly as The way is the subject and the verb should be was.
Between B & E , I would select B taking meaning into consideration . It makes more sense to discover something through careful observation rather than discovery being as a result of observation.

This is Subject- Verb agreement question - The way X and Y eat is the correct usage. Now, the subject is The way so the linking verb should be singular. Hence B.
