23. The workers at Bell Manufacturing will shortly go on strike unless the management increases their wages. As Bell's president is well aware, however, in order to increase the worker's wages, Bell would have to sell off some of its subsidiaries. So, some of Bell's subsidiaries will be sold.
The conclusion above is properly drawn if which one of the following is assumed?
(A) Bell Manufacturing will begin to suffer increased losses.
(B) Bell's management will refuse to increase its worker's wages.
(C) The workers at Bell Manufacturing will not be going on strike.
(D) Bell's president has the authority to offer the workers their desired wage increase.
(E) Bell's workers will not accept a package of improved benefits in place of their desired wage increase.

E) is tempting, but imo it is simply out of the scope.
Then I go with D)

The argument
(1) a strike unless an increase=If not an increase, then a strike
(2) If an increase, then selling off subsidiares
(3) If X, then selling off
(1) can be rewritten: If not a strike, then an increase. Continue a chain: If an increase, then selling off. Therefore, If not strike, then selling off. X=not a strike.
I vote for C.

Initially, when i checked the key,i couldnt believe that C is the answer.
But i guess i didnt know formal logic.
Stolyar, can you give us an idea about how to use formal logic in CR's
Thanks

Sometimes I post my own formal logic quizes—you can find them in the verbal forum. Likewise, there are logic guides that are available here at this site.

Re: CR : Bell Manufacturing ,#2 -23 [#permalink]

not increase => strike
increase => sell off
So
not strike => increase => sell off
From this, we can ONLY conclude that NOT sell off => NOT increase => NOT not trike = strike
We cannot conclude that Sell off => increase => not strike
So C is not assumption! Intuitively, you may sell off but use the money for other purpose and therefore strike still happend. So one of the assumption here is that Money only used for increasing salary.
1 more point because sell off hasn't happend (and by no mean that you know it will happend), IF we assume that no strike SO why we have to sell off something!!!
I believe that the book may choose C as assumption BUT in gmat test, it will not make this mistake
Any idea
