I am not really sure here as I haven't started on my quant preps yet, so please excuse any blunder:

We need the number of way in which Julia would finish the race before Maria. Since there's no other piece of information, it doesn't matter where either of them finishes. Therefore, the approach would be a simple 5P2 = 20 ways.

10 ways

If Julia is in 1st place then Maria can occupy 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th place
If Julia is in 2nd place then Maria can occupy 3rd, 4th or 5th place
If Julia is in 3rd place then Maria can occupy 4th or 5th place
If Julia is in 4th place then Maria can occupy 5th place

Julia in 1st place - 1.4P1.3P3 ( Julia takes 1st place in 1 way, Maria take any of the remaining 4 places in 4P1 ways, rest three take the remaining three places in 3P3 ways)
Julia in 2nd place - 1.3P1.3P3
Julia in 3 rd place - 1.2P1.3P3
Julia in 4 th place - 1.1P1.3P3

Number of ways = sum of above
= 3p3(4 + 3+ 2+1) = 60
