There are 68 cars on a parking lot. If 36 of the cars are sedans, and 48 of the cars have automatic transmissions, what is the ratio of the minimum possible number of sedans with automatic transmissions to the number of cars in the parking lot?

Sorry I have skipped the choices purposely.

4/17
Assign all standard gears to sedans --> 20 standard to 20 sedans
16 sedans left with 16 automatic gears (min # of aut. sedans)
16/68 --> 4/17

I got 4/17 too

Sedans 36 + NonSedans 32
Auto 48 + NonAuto 20

To minimise Sedan-Auto combination, assign as much NonSedan to Auto as possible (32 out of 48). So 16 automatic has to be sedan.
Ratio = 16/68 = 4/17

I have 4/17 too.

36 + 48 - x = 68

x = 16

16 : 68 = 8 : 34 = 4 : 17

Alex
