To compare one thing to another, use "that" or "those". Ex. The legs of chair A are more wobbly than those of chair B. Thus, in the problem above, using "it" would mean that you are comparing some amount of energy to itself. But we want to compare one amount of energy to another.

I feel the point made by SaraiGMAXonline makes more sense for C to be the best answer.

@SaraiGMAXonline
your logic of not using 'it' for comparision when compare one thing to another does not fits here.
Can you please throw some flashlight here ?
404. In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s.

(A) twice as fast as (B) twice as fast as it was in (C) twice what it was in (D) two times faster than that of (E) two times greater than C is right 'it' is ok as referring to the old copy which was in a different state in the past. Twice is better than two times. Also I feel 'as fast as' is a repetition of rate of increase according to logic. eg- My tummy has grown bigger to what it was a decade ago. (single objects) eg- My tummy has grown bigger than that of my neighbor's. (two diff objects) On the older (the one posted on the top) question, I believe x2suresh makes more sense. 'SaraiGMAXonline' logic is of no use there. eg- I love the cake as it is brown in color. (right) eg- I love the topping on the cake as it is brown in color. (wrong: Pronoun ambiguity) Please comment.

Let me see if I can clarify. In the problem above, the rate is indeed compared to itself, and thus, "it" is appropriate. Also, you are right yogeshagarwala, "two times" is never correct on the SC. As for the "I love cake..." example, that sentence is not a comparison, so the correctness of "it" is a matter of ambiguity, a matter completely separate from the issue of "it" versus "that" in comparisons.

the moment we realise that we must use the expression "as X as Y" remaining choices can be eliminated quickly. A can immediately be ruled out because it uses THAN --- even if we disregard the ambiguity caused by IT. Choice B uses correct idiom and now we cannot disregard the ambiguity caused by IT. same problem as in B exists with D as well. E uses THAN so again it can be eliminated. only choice remaining is C. quit123 wrote: 54. Please comment on the use of 'it'. I believe its an issue with pronoun ambiguity for B and D.

Well .. 'it' is a pronoun .. and it can only be used to refer a noun .. now in the meaning of the sentence, it is used to refer energy generated not the energy itself - the focus is on generation of energy in two times. Hence, we should not use 'it'.

The correct idiom is "as X as Y" that leaves B, C & D
There are hopeful signs that we are shifting away from our heavy reliance on fosil fuels; more than ten times as much energy is generated through wind power now than it was in 1990.
A generated through wind power now than it was B. generated through wind power now as it was - 'it' can refer to 'wind power' or 'energy' C. generated through wind power now as was the case D. now generated through wind power as it was - 'it' can refer to 'wind power' or 'energy' E. now generated through wind power than was the case

A. generated through wind power now than it was B.generated through wind power now than as it was C.generated through wind power now as was the case D. now generated through wind power as it was E.now generated through wind power than was the case its C correct idiom is as X as Y So A, B, E are out.. out of C and D - 'as much energy is generated now as' - is appropriate compared to 'as much energy is now generate as it was'

A – “Ten times as much energy … as” is needed. Eliminate B – IT is ambiguous. Eliminate C – Keep. D – misplaced modifier now. Eliminate E – Eliminate as A
