There is a tank where certain fluid is stored. The tank is full. There are five guys who take half of what is stored. The first guy takes half, the second takes half a remainder, and so on.

How much fluid in terms of the initial quantity will they take away?

How did you get that??

How is it possible-- that if only half of the tank liquid was taken initially by the 5 guys....how can they take more than 1/2?

Please some one explain. I'm getting a totally different answer and think i'm right!!

I don't know if stolyar made the question by himself, but it's ambiguous.

What the question should look like:

There is a tank in which a certain fluid is stored. The tank is full. If there are five guys who take an amount of fluid out of the tank, whereas the first one takes out half of the entire amount, the second one half of the remainder etc., how much fluid will be left in the tank?



1-0,5^5= 31/32

Guy1: Before taking = 1 . Taken = 1/2
Guy2: Before taking = 1/2 . Taken = 1/4
Guy3: Before taking = 1/4 . Taken = 1/8
Guy4: Before taking = 1/8 . Taken = 1/16
Guy5: Before taking = 1/16 . Taken = 1/32 Now left is 1/32

Total taken by all = 1-(1/32) = 31/32

1-0,5^5= 31/32


So basically-- if they are asking how much fluid will be left in the tank, the answer should be 1- 31/32 since the 5 guys have taken 31/32 of the liquid in the tank.

So answer should be 1/32 of the liquid is left in the tank. Is that correct or am i interpreting the question incorrectly.

follow dahiya's logic.

Each guy takes out the half of the remainder.

En bref: 1/2 is left after the first guy has done ...

1-(1/2)^5
