I got this wrong, interested to see what others come up with and why.

E for me,

As we can split the sentence in 2 as in

in damaging forests.....

in slowing the growth of forests.....

Both clauses are correct when split....

E.

(A) take out "or damaging" and you get "there is not consensus on what role is played by acid rain in slowing the growth forests...". You need an "of".

(B) "slow of growth" is wrong... you need slowing

(C) "slowness of growth" is wrong for the same reason.. you need slowing

(D) wrong tense here
