Between A and E, I think are is necessary. Can`t explain, it just sounds more natural.

I say E - C can't be right as "forms of solar energy will be now competitive" is wrong.
"forms are and will be"

a little strange that no one here picked D , it's the OA though  ...it's the book said so, I can't catch the point, hope someone can point out why...

I think you are right, D is the answer.
C is wrong because it says "will be competitive either now..."
Will be is future and now is present...
D corrects this problem.
