This caught my attention Stolyar.

Seven workers from the first group have to pan out 100 tons of auriferous ore. The second group consists of four workers, two apprentices, and one master who work 1/3 and 1┬╜ as fast as does a worker accordingly. The second group has to pan out the same pile of ore. Find a ratio of the time that the first group needs to have the work done to the time that the second group needs.

Does the work done equal 100 ores?

Does the work done equal 100 ores?

Yes, the work equals to panning out 100 ton. But since the work is the same for both groups, you can equal it to 1.

W = r*t

W = r1t1 = r2t2
so t1/t2 = r2/r1

let the rate at which one worker works be r
so r1 = 7/r is the work done in unit time
r2 = 4/r + 1/3 * 2/r + 3/2 * 1/r = 37/6r
r2/r1 = ( 37/6r ) / ( 7/r ) = 37/42 or 37:42

Be cautious about the last sentence of the question. It exacts the ration of (Time of group1)/(Time of group2)
