This is an extract from an article found :

The members of the House of Commons were unlikely to be
won over by appeals to Christian morality or human compassion: they “no more
dreamt of a seat in the House in order to benefit humanity than a child dreams of a
birthday cake that others may eat it.”

The first part means they were not looking forward to help
humanity anymore.
what does the second part(the comparison) mean?

Thanks in advance

The comparison means that they did not attain their position in the House of Commons to benefit humanity but rather themselves.
