OA is A, according to 1000 series.

985. Those who have visited the Grand Canyon have typically seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors that mark the passage of time like the rings in a tree trunk.

(A) seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors that mark- true canyon has different colors
(D) been able to see layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors marking- unnecessary wordy
(E) seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, marking by different colors - the action of seeing "layers of sediment in the gaping", does not relate to "marking by different colors "

I answered D because been able to see should follow have typically.

So we have people thinking A, D & E all correct. What really is the correct answer?

The intent : the layers of sediment have different colours and not the Canyon

Thus B / C = Eliminated ( canyon, WHOSE....... diff colours )

D : Visitors HAVE BEEN ABLE TO see layers of sediment................ ( Do we really need such heavy construction = we can simply say : Visitors HAVE SEEN layers of sediment ) = Thus CONCISION wins = D eliminated

Leaving us with A n E :

E : Visitors have seenlayers of sediment in the gaping canyon, marking by different colors........... the passage of time

A :Visitors have seenlayers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors that mark........ the passage of time

which one will you zone in on bxn the reduced stems :

E : ........Layers of sediment, marking by different colours the passage of time = ( Does it make any sense ?) = Eliminated

A : ........Layers of sediment with different colours that mark the passage of time ( Perfect )

Leading to A.

I believe it's A but I really dislike the 1000 series since those questions tend to be the most debated questions.
