(C) All those who have an influence on the community┬б┬пs values participate in local politics.

I would choose D.
But A could also be the answer.

Could you show how D may or may not be true?

Agree that D really may or may not be true.
Say, local gangsters who do not participate in elections may have an influence on the community's values.
draw Venn diagrams and you will see
We need what MUST BE true.

In this case, it is A.

Stolyar

your example is exactly what D is saying.

Answer choice D:

(D) Some of those who influence the community┬б┬пs values neither are interested in public service nor are selfish opportunists.

'may or may not be' means that though the situation given in D may certainly exist it is not necessary that it HAS TO exist. Meaning even if you negate D it will not kill the argument, but you cannot negate A because it is given in the premise itself:
Quote:
Those who participate in local politics include ... who are selfish opportunists. Everyone who participates in local politics has an influence on the community┬б┬пs values.
