C,D,E - changes meaning
B - I wasn't sure, but it seems incorrect with "was"

Agree that C, D, E change meaning, so it comes down to A or B, of which the second clause of the two are the same, so the difference is:

A: Before Greece was Greece,
B: Before there was Greece,

With "B," I think it would have to read "Before there was a Greece" to make sense, so I went with A.

IMO A.
In B and C, what does it refer to? It looks like it doesn’t refer to Greece.

OA is A.

I initially chose B because I thought it was simplifying the sentence but I guess A not :)

I eliminated down to A and B as well and picked B instead

I am still not sure how A is better than B?

Thanks

eventhough A sounds crazy but it is the correct answer. in my point of view in B "it" refers Greece passively but in A "it" refers Greece more actively. on the other hand "before there was Greece" it would be something that could be singular or plural. in this sense "it' in B is ambiguous. please correct me if my reasoning is wrong

Yup A it is.

Call me a nerd but I swear I have seen exactly the same type of question on OG 12th Edition. Something related to an author. Damn I'm getting old. Earlier I could get the exact question and Page number :)

1. Similar exercise

In the minds of many people living in England, before Australia was Australia, it was the antipodes, the opposite pole to civilization, an obscure and unimaginable place that was considered the end of the world.

(A) before Australia was Australia, it was the antipodes
(B) before there was Australia, it was the antipodes
(C) it was the antipodes that was Australia
(D) Australia was what was the antipodes
(E) Australia was what had been known as the antipodes

OA A

2(somewhat similar exercise)

Before George Eliot became the popular and respected novelist known as George Eliot, she had been an anonymous translator and essayist
(A) Before George Eliot became the popular and respected novelist known as George Eliot, she had been
(B) Before she had been the popular and respected novelist, George Eliot she was
(C) George Eliot has been popular and respected novelist, George Eliot after such time as she was
(D) Before George Eliot became the popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, she was
(E) George Eliot, before she was the popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, had been

OA A

Funnily all the three examples have A as their OA

B - eliminate from "it was"
C - eliminate from "it was"
D - eliminate for nonsense

So A or E. E changes our meaning a bit too much. Let's go with A...

Hi,

B , C : It doesnt have a clear referrent = Eliminated

D : absurd construction ( It was X that was Greece ) = Eliminated

Bxn A & E :

The intent of the sentence = Before the formation of current day Greece , it was a collection of X and Y

E : Greece became a collection ( future flavour ) ==== greece didn't become a collection, the collection was already there = Eliminated

Leading to A
