1st point of elimination : IDIOM is greater..than and more..than NOT greater..as or more...as

OPTIONS LEFT : C and E

E has verb error : for plural differences singular 'is' is being used. HENCE answer is c

I'd like to know "greater ... than" should be used only refer to single statistic otherwise used "more ... than".
Why greater ... than could be used here ?

My approach to solve this as follows :

1. Here sense of smell is being needs to be parallel with the underline statement "scenting ability"
2. Since sense of smell is singular we need is ... Eliminate D & E
3. In A,B and C B has an error with inappropriate use of more, hence eliminated
4. Between A and C, C has the correct usage of the idiom
