I am looking at A as the answer. he had had success, yet he opted out. so the rule of past perfect is followed.

C looks closer though

Hi,

The sentence reveals a contradiction, therefore D and E can be eliminated

B applies present perfect which is not relevant here.

Between A and C, A should be more appropriate than C as 'Even though' in C sounds redundant to me.

I think A should be the correct choice.
