A. Zoe had found that she had to spend very little time maintaining it - "had found" needs to be simple tense "found". Zoe "had" a collection. Only after she had the collection "she found" she needed to spend little time maintaining it. "Had found" implies that she found she need to spend little time maintaining it before she had the collection.

B. Zoe found that she had to spend very little time maintaining them "Them" needs to be "it" since collection is singular noun.

C. Zoe has found that she has had to spend very little time maintaining it "Has found" is incorrect since action ('finding") is completed in the past.

D. Zoe had found that she has to spend very little time maintaining them Comibnes errors from B. and C.

E. Zoe found that she had to spend very little time maintaining it

The answer is either B or E, depending on the intended meaning of the sentence - is she maintaining the typewriters or the collection? Maintaining typewriters makes more sense, but I think the sentence is looking for maintaining the collection, so I will choose E.

I have seen some material suggest that a pronoun cannot refer to the object of a preposition, but I think this is wrong. There are examples of this correctly happening in the OGs. The question would be better and the answer would be clearer (but still tricky enough) in my opinion if the original sentence had used "typewriter collection" so that there is no way that "them" would be correct.

Answer is E.."of antique typewriters" is prepositional pharse modifying "collection". B and D is out as it is using "them" A and C has verb usuage error. E is using right verb tense "found" and "had to spend"

Hi Umesh.....

I have doubt...as far i have studied and practiced question....past perfect is used only when the two events are related....In this it is not...as you might have also come across an example :-
Q 128 OG 13 Answer D is not right as the events are not related....I think the question at hand is similar and the answer in no case be E......What do you say...

Though her collection of antique typewriters was quite extensive, Zoe had found that she had to spend very little time maintaining it.
There are two sequence of events:
1st - She spent very little time maintaining
2nd - Zoe found
Thus 1st event should be in Past perfect and 2nd should be in simple past.

Zoe had found that she had to spend very little time maintaining it
Incorrect: 2nd event should be in simple past as explained above.

Zoe found that she had to spend very little time maintaining them
Incorrect. The tense sequence is correct however, "them" should be singular since it is referring to a collection (collective noun)

Zoe has found that she has had to spend very little time maintaining it
Incorrect. Same as A.

Zoe had found that she has to spend very little time maintaining them
Same as A & B

Zoe found that she had to spend very little time maintaining it
Correct.

Answer: E
