Nope, S-V error in C.

I thought, "conditions" has typo.

Left with D and B. Would choose D.

I choose B as the modifier - according to aviation officials is close to acceptable.

Between B and C, I go with C. B has awkward sentence structure. I don't see any problem was s-v agreement in B since runway is singulr and 'was' was referring to the runway, not the conditions...

I'm going with "C".

(B) the runway had conditions during the emergency landing which were acceptable according to aviation officials
>> Suggests that runway already had the condition during emerg. landing.

(C) the runway was in, according to aviation officials, acceptable conditions during the time of the emergency landing
>> Hmmm

(D) the runway was said by aviation officials to be in acceptable condition during the emergency landing
>> Passive + complex way.....

I agree..But in the orginal there is a modifier problem. No?

Though it had about 11 inches of snow, aviation officials said conditions on the runway at the time of the emergency landing were acceptable.

(A) aviation officials said conditions on the runway at the time of the emergency landing were acceptable - This is correct.
"Though it had about 11 inches of snow" is not a modifier rather an adverbial clause; therfore, "runway" is not required immediately after "though ..snow".

(B) the runway had conditions during the emergency landing which were acceptable according to aviation officials (which is not referring to runway)

(C) the runway was in, according to aviation officials, acceptable conditions during the time of the emergency landing

This is a "subject- predicate nominative" problem and not a subject-verb problem. In this sentence, "was" is a linking verb and "conditions" is a predicate nominative that describes the subject "runway". However, "runway" is singular and "conditions" is plural. You can't say "John is painters", can you ?

(D) the runway was said by aviation officials to be in acceptable condition during the emergency landing - "runway was said to be" is passive and weird construction

(E) the runway's condition, at the time of the emergency landing, were acceptable according to the aviation officials
This is a subject-verb issue. "condition" can't have "were".

(A) is out because 'it' has to point to 'runway' which is absent.

Other than (C) all choices reads strange.

(C).

(C).

If I can remember, this is a mgmat sc, isn't it?
I think I had it wrong, too because I chose A.
I still think A could be correct unless 'said X' instead of 'said that X' is incorrect. I don't see modifier problem, since we can say:

Though my car is green, I like it
=
Though it is green, I like my car
and not
<>Though it is green, my car is liked by me!

Concerning C, I don't see SV agreement errors. However it is completly akward.
Finally, D is correct but passive.

In conclusion, I like mgmat's SC book but prefer by far OG's + SC1000 questions which are less ambiguous.

A is perfectly alright according to me.

Basically, the purport of the sentence is to describe the conditions on the runway as opposed to describing the Runway's condition.

Very well explained Swagatalaksmi..

I have a couple of questions here.
Isnt runway noun?
So how can a adverbial clause modify a noun?

Thanks!

Problem with this sentence is the pronoun 'it' in the non-underlined part of the sentence. It has no noun that it can refer to. If we can replace it with - say 'air port' then the whole sentence seems to make more sense than as stated. But since ACT is more interested in the mistakes in the underlined part of the sentence, I will choose A.

Though it had about 11 inches of snow, aviation officials said conditions on the runway at the time of the emergency landing were acceptable.

(A) aviation officials said conditions on the runway at the time of the emergency landing were acceptable - WRONG
"It" in the non underlined portion should be followed by what it is modifying. It does not modify aviation officials

(B) the runway had conditions during the emergency landing which were acceptable according to aviation officials WRONG
passive and wordy

(C) the runway was in, according to aviation officials, acceptable conditions during the time of the emergency landing - WRONG
it is the runway's condition. The runway does not have conditions.

(D) the runway was said by aviation officials to be in acceptable condition during the emergency landing - CORRECT
modifier refers correctly to runway. Although the structure is a little backwards, I dont find any grammatical errors here.

(E) the runway's condition, at the time of the emergency landing, were acceptable according to the aviation officials
the runway had 11 inches of snow not the runway's condition.

ANSWER IS D
