It clearly states that now the tomato is eaten in large quantities but that it was considered poisonous and the reason why it was considered poisonous.

I think this sentence is testing the grammatical construction and meaning.

eaten...known... "it" in (D) clearly refers to the tomatoe.

Hey guys, doesn't it seem like we have had quite a few tomatoe SCs recently??
